Hola familia!

We had a good week here in Querecotillo….Really really slow, but it was all right.  The highlight was definitely going to Talara and getting to see all of my friends from over there.

I am so happy that my letter got there, and that you all liked them.  I am going to be better with that.  Sounds like you also had a great spring break!  Jealous!

So As I said, the conference in Talara was the best!  It was so fun to pass through Negreiros and to have some time to chill with Elder Rodriguez and the missionary who he is training.  He is a great guy and I am grateful for having had the opportunity to train him.  He’s a great friend.  The conference was so awesome,  President Rowley is amazing and we had a good time.  To finish the conference, the two zones attending had each prepared a skit to act out a Book of Mormon story.  But the Latinos had to speak in English and the gringos in Spanish….That was soooo funny!  I really love being in my mission and with President Rowley.

Zack with Elder R his 'son' (the Elder he trained) and his 'grandson'...the Elder that Elder R is training

Also this week, we had a service project in the chacras (banana orchards) with some other missionaries, and some members.  Hear this:  I will never ever ever complain about weeding ever again.  We arrived, they gave us a shovel, and we just started hacking away at acres of under-brush, with mosquitos everywhere, and the sun burning and burning and burning.  I am sorry for all the complaints that I have ever made about yard work.  But really, it was a tough one.  But also, we got to go see the river...and when we were leaving, there were a couple of guys climbing up the coconut trees and cutting down the coconuts, so that was way cool to see.  They even gave us a couple of coconuts to drink the water.  But dad, shoveling 10 yards of manure is bad….but this is the worst work I have ever done! Jaja!

Service Day in the banana fields...makes weeding at home a cake walk.

Questions!

What are you going to add to your diet this week instead only eating pancakes?
Well...I found maple syrup today…so this week, it’s pancakes with maple syrup!  Jaja
...and I bought more veggies for this week.

Zone Conference?
So fun! (and the picture is of me, Elder Rodriguez, and my “grandson” as they say...
the elder that he is training.

Companionship/friendship?
Things are just going really slow here.

We are super excited about Mirium and Miguel...are they still progressing?  I bet you didn’t know that you can be a missionary AND a wedding planner!
So they are progressing!  They are going to get married! Which is a HUGE step for them.  Miguel is a tough one, but were working lots with him.

Loved the story of Francisco Aguilar as well.  Love how you are teaching the Atonement and seeing it work in his life...how is he doing? It’s a Happy Birthday baptism!!
I love to work with Francisco… He is just so truthful and humble.  I asked him which kingdom of glory he would like to go to, and with the most confident, honest voice, and with total sincerity, he said, “The second one”….

I kinda laughed a little, but he is progressing little by little.

Transfer is 1/2 way right?
Yep!  I think I can I think I can…  I really really really want to train again.

Can you believe you’ve been gone 9 months?  How about that?
It kinda scares me to see how fast its going.  But its all good.  I am enjoying it, and it’s kinda interesting to see me turn from a greenie, to a more seasoned missionary.

Sending a package this week...any requests?
Lots of photos and letters, and a little bit of chocolate…I got a package from g and g Bradshaw which was soooooooo great!  Thanks!  And also a group of fun pictures and letters from Jeff and his family...thanks!

So I am happy, and ok... Just a little bit frusturated with the pace of the work.  But I am doing what I can!  I love you all lots and hope that everything goes well for you.

Oh, and Lexi!  TAKE AMERICAN STUDIES

Love you lots

I Learned Some Things

Well family...

Ojala que todo esté yendo bien en Costa Rica!  Entonces voy a escribir todo esta carta en Español por que están allí.....No....tendré misericordia con ustedes.

(Parent translation...Hopefully everything is going well in Costa Rica!  I’ll write this letter in Spanish since you all are there ..... No. ... I will have mercy on you.)

haha!  That bit of news really took me by surprise.  But it's all good,  I bet you are in quite a similar area like me!  Spanish, indescribable heat, food that is similar, and lots and lots of dirt and dust.  But...I will guarantee that there is more heat and more dust here...jaja

So, I made a decision,  I am really sorry for being so negative and sad in all of my emails.  I loved what Elder Uchtdorf said in Priesthood session “that a bad attitude can be an addiction”  (don't know if thats what he said, but thats what I learned).  So I am sorry for all of the bad news and bad things which I have told you.  So, from now on, I will be more positive.  I wont keep things from you, but I will be more positive.

So right now, I actually am pretty good.  We had a good week, had a good conference, and a good Pday, just sooooo hot.  This week went really slow, and I am kinda glad its over, but there were a couple of great things which I learned...

We have an investigator who is named Francisco Aguilar.  He is like 70 years old, and has super bad health.  He has lots of doubts and lots of problems, but we really are seeing the power of the Atonement in his life.  We have had two lessons with him,  the first he was so discouraged, and we just talked about the atonement and how Christ knows him.  After that, he prayed and our next visit, he was so happy and content.  He still has doubts and problems, but the Savior is really helping him to pull his load (like Elder Bednar explained, loved that talk).  Francisco now has a baptismal date for the 17 de May!

The other good experience that we had, was that there is a couple here that has been listening to the missionaries for so long!  They are so wonderful, but the Husband (Miguel) doesn’t want to baptize or get married.  His wife (Mirium) wants to be baptized, but cant because she isn’t married.  This week, we saw a huge improvement in both of them.  Miguel began to read, and Mirium was all good.  And they accepted a Marriage date!  May 10.  So happy for them.

Plus, I loved this conference!  We got to watch it live (in Spanish).  I learned so much and the Spirit that it brought into my life is just incredible.  The only bad part is sitting in a burning hot chapel in a suit, super focusing to listen in Spanish, for ten hours, but its all good and worth it.  I loved Elder Bednar’s talk and basically all of them....But there is one I want to talk about more....The one from M Russell Ballard....I testify that there is power in studying Preach My Gospel.  I know that you will feel closer to Taylor and I if you study it, and that you will have a greater appreciation for the mission work.  I invite you to start when you are home, with Chapter 3, Lesson 1.  To study it, study the scriptures, invitations, and commitments.  You will learn so much and you will love it!  And next week, you have to tell me how it’s going!  And I will “follow up.”  Girls, Lexi and Elli are included in this.  Dad, I am so happy for your time that you have spent sharing the gospel.  (Mike had a 20 min. discussion with the lady that was helping him on the Microsoft tech support line the other day about our church and missionary work) That really makes me happy!

Eating well?
Mas o menos.  I am cooking lots of pancakes....

Are you doing some fun things?
Conference, tomorrow we have a service project in the banana fields with some of the other missionaries, and a Multi zone conference in Talara on Thursday!

Did you have a fun Pday?
Today, we all ate together, play futbol, and prepared a skit for the conference

Did you say that you are having a multi-zone conference soon?  What is that?
Every three months, the mission gets together in Zones.  Like three or four zones get together and president comes and we have a conference all day long.  But the one this week, I get to go to Talara (I was there for 6 months) and I will get to see Elder Rodriguez and some other friends.

Did you get to listen to conference?  I hope so.
Every session!

There was a 8.2 earthquake off the northern coast of Chili last Tuesday.  Did you feel that?
I didn't feel it, but lots of people were talking about it.

Do you ever go out to eat?
Because we are so far away from the Stake Center, this week we did with our district on Saturday.  I was so fun.  We are planning a day to eat here in Querecotillo with our Ward Mission Leader (who is my best friend here).

Well Family, I am good and I am happy.  During conference, I learned something else.  Whenever I am sad or discouraged, I am going to think of three small things that I am grateful for in that moment...whatever they may be!  It has helped me lots and I am excited to see how much it helps me in the future.
Also, I received letters from the CBs (thanks by the way)...and also from a guy named Adam  ( I don't know him) but he served here in Piura like 15 years ago.  He found my blog and sent me a real kind letter.  He lives in Cedar city.  If you could contact him, I would love to talk with him a little more.  His letter really helped me.  That.  Was a cool experience!

Well family, I love you lots and hope that everything goes well, even if you are in Costa Rica!

HEY...ARE YOU THE MORMONS??

Wow!  Almost April!  ...and...... Feliz Cumpleaños a mí Mamá!  (...here usually comes the clapping and screaming and off-toned Happy birthday song in Spanish.)  I hope you have a really wonderful birthday mom!  I am so grateful for everything you have ever done for me!  I am who I am, because of my awesome mother!

So this week was better!  I am getting along pretty good with my companion which is good.  We are actually really good friends, just when it comes to a few small things we struggle.  But we are finding unity in teaching, and finding lessons filled with the Spirit, we’re just not really finding new people to teach.

We really are empty handed with investigators.  We have three that are really great people, they just have certain problems that just don’t allow them to progress.  Which is the worst.

But...this week, we were walking down the road after a service project (we are still building this house) and a man who works cleaning the streets stopped us...

“HEY...are you the Mormons?  I feel so empty and really want you to visit me!.....”

It was a really cool experience.  Just that morning I had asked the Lord to guide us to find someone...but it looks like the Lord guided him to find us!  That same day, we went to visit him, and it was a really good lesson filled with the Spirit.  I really think he will be a great investigator, and I am really excited to work with him...Hermano Santos is his name.

Other than that, nothing more really good happened.  We are really working hard with some less actives, and we really saw miracles this week  in their progress.  A less active with 4 years not going to the church came yesterday!  I love love love working with the less actives!

Well its been a good week, just looking for strength for 5 more.  Dad, I did realize that I am stressing out a TON this transfer.  So I am fixing that.

I love you all so much!  I am good and happy and motivated and ready to work!  Thanks for everything!

Not the time for a transfer

So....Transfers have come and gone...and we don´t have a transfer.
So we have got 6 more weeks here together.  I am really content, not too excited, or too happy, but I am really content and ready to see what we can do in this transfer.

This week, we really got closer as friends, companions, and people.  We had a little bit of a long week, but to finish our weekly planning, we finish with a companionship inventory.  It started off bad, but I don't really know what happened, but we finished just giving really nice complements and saying really nice things about each other.  It really was kinda weird, but good.  We fixed our problems and are ready to work.  So with this change in attitude in between us, I am excited to see what the next 6 weeks bring.  I would of liked a transfer, but President responded to my letter, and let me know that he really thinks that this is best for us.  I know it is, and I am ready to see what it brings.

I am just a little bit apprehensive, because I feel like when I try to be obedient, that is when we have the most problems, but if I sacrifice some small parts, like perhaps a planning session a little bit faster and less efficient, or perhaps leave the apartment 30 minutes later...that's when we get are able to get along better.  Its a weird balance, and I am going to do my best to try to help him understand the importance of the 'small and simple things'.  Right now, I don't feel really obedient because of lots of the things that have happened, but this week I really am going to do everything possible to whip it back into shape. But we're doing good, and we will see how it goes.  With all of my companions, I have 2 transfers, and for me, it is always hard to have a companion for two transfers...so I know that there will be days and weeks that just stink...but in the end, it will all be good, and, as always...the time will pass.

But, this week was a really hard one for me.  I had the worst case of raging diarrhea that has ever been seen in Peru.  I was running to the bathroom like 20 times a day.  I didn't eat anything, but my body was getting rid of everything including the water that I drank.  SO, that was interesting, but the worst part only lasted from Tuesday to Thursday, but then...I got sick again.  I am fine now, so don't worry about me. It was just a couple of sleepless nights, and a little bit of pain.

The worst part of it is that it threw off my game.  I had to stay in one morning and that made me feel horrible.  When I am not obedient, I feel really bad.  Also with transfers and everything, I was just really stressed out.

Also...we are struggling because we don't really have any good investigators right now, and everything is just going really really slow. With the stress, tiredness, feeling of slight failure, and the sickness, I got really discouraged for a couple of days. I just felt so alone, really weak, and really incompetent.  Just a really hard and discouraging time.

But...it's all good, I am better now, and ready to work.   Trying to shrug off a bad week, and break out new for this week.  Thats my goal.

This week there really wasn't really any good stories or anything, so sorry!

1.  How are things with the companion.  Tell me three things you are learning from him.

I have learned tons from him.  Lots about the converting power of the gospel and the atonement.  I have learned the importance of prayer and the importance of having lots of trust with investigators.

2.  What spiritual experiences would you like to share with us?

When I just felt so alone and was struggling, I just prayed for understanding in my personal study, and the Lord granted it.  I just felt so close and so loved, and felt so illuminated.  It was a great experience.

3.  food/stomach situation?

Really quite horrible this week, but better now.

4.  What do you love most about your mission?

Love the People, the opportunity I have to feel so close to the Lord everyday, and the blessings I have received.

5.  pday?

Soccer!  I really love soccer!

6.  Anything funny this week?

We are teaching a members parents, and they are taking care of their chubby, snotty grand daughter. And every time we go, she just gets super mad and rolls around on the floor, throws her food across the room, and what ever else...swearing and whatever.  We try to talk to her, she is just always angry.

7.  Investigators?

No one.  Only people that love our visits, but don't do anything.  NOTHING.

8.  Mail?
From sister Timms, Gma and Gpa Bshaw, Sister Terry Richards, Gma Palmer. and a package for Valentines day! Thank you everyone.

9.  Best part of your week?

After that comp inventory.  Just a good feeling

10.  Photos?

A crazy man who prints pictures uploaded a virus on my card, so I can't load, or send or take more pics! I have another card, but I am just sooooooooooo mad. Don't know what to do.  I have another card, so I am going to use that, but I think I might send my card with my pics to you so you might be able to take it to a place to fix it.  SO MAD

Thanks so much for everything family.  I am good, healthy, and happy,  and really ready to work.  Thanks for all of the support and love.  I feel it daily and am so grateful for it. Keep doing good things, and keep on trucking.  The Lord is always on your side.

Eight months!!

Well, I've got eight months here in Peru!  8 months without comfort food, without swimming, without really understanding 100% what is going on...but its been such a great time.  I love Peru, and I love being here.
This was a good week.  I am super tired, and soooo exhausted, but am content with what has happened. This week, we baptized Ruth Helen!  The wife from the RM who we reactivated.  It was a great sight to see him standing in the water with his white tie, and helping his wife enter the font.  It felt good to help complete a family, and helping open the doors to an eternal family.  I really enjoyed that!

Now for the funny part.  We are standing there, at her baptism, singing NEARER MY GOD TO THEE, when a full on earthquake starts up!  Everyone was freaking out, and the water in the font was all sloshing around.  And...for some reason, it was soooooooo funny!  In some parts, a couple of buildings had a little bit of damage, and the ground split in other parts of the mission, but no one was hurt or died.  Just a good experience.

Shoot, I forgot my camera cord to send pictures!

I really don't know what more to write.

Oh, also today, we were playing some sports for PDAY with the zone and my comp got hit in the head.  Long story short,  I walked through the sketchiest Peruvian hospital, and in the end...he ended getting 3 stitches!  A little bit crazy!

I'm sorry I am out of time!

Another week gone by...

Wow quite the week.

Lots of Companion “discussions” and lots of silence.

Really I’m a little bit discouraged and not really knowing what to do.  I have had some pretty tough discouraging experiences on my mission.  Don’t know what to do.  Sorry, this email is kinda a downer.  Today we are doing better, but I really don’t know.

This week was good.  The highlight for sure was the interview with President Rowley.  I love him!  He is soooooo awesome.  We had a really great time.  He told me somethings that I really needed to hear, boosted my attitude and all.  Way cool guy.  Just love being around him and his wife  (who had read my story!).

The rest of this week was just work, and yeah.

We had a great pday activity today.  We were going to go to the stake center to play some futbol, but we didn't have keys.  So, we went to a little concrete block, and there we played a little soccer with like have my zone.  Then after we went and we each bought ourselves two huge fresh fruit slurpees and just chilled there.  I have some really great friends in the mission that are just so awesome.  So...it was just fun to be there for a little with them.

Spiritual time:
My interview with Presidente Rowley was just wonderful.  I loved every moment.

Funny time:
PDAY activity was awesome

Interesting food time:
Nothing too bad this week.  Just lots and lots of rice

Health check:
I’m getting out of a stomach bug that I have had for a week or two..  I have just been off and on sick.

Journal check:
Almost every night!  I have really improved.

Pday fun:
Futbol in a park and Cremoladas!

Photos?  (please say yes!)
With my Pensionista, and Ward Mission leader, and my companion for my ward mission leaders birthday.  I love them they are sooooooo awesome.

Zack with Pensionista and her son...the ward mission leader...great friends.

Mail?
Got mail from TAYLOR!!!  Erin Rhodes, Terry Richards, Sister Lund, and Connor Christensen's mom, and Jerry Young...thank you SO MUCH!!!! It really makes things better when we get mail!

Scary stuff?
not really.

Keeping your room clean?
Yes!  its hard but I am trying

Yesterday, I was looking through my ipod and found a bunch of pictures on it of family and friends.   So yeah, that’s been a little interesting.

I am so sorry.  Its really been a tough week, and I don’t want you to be sad or to be discouraged.

Thanks for everything.  Love you all so much.

Through the fire and the flames...

Hello all:

What a week!

It was really good, and really bad, and really good, and really bad.

SO I’ll start with the good, then mom can clip out the bad.

This week I saw two huge miracles.

We are teaching a less active man named Antonio.  He was the first missionary from the branch and is an awesome guy.  But after his mission, he messed up.  And now we are teaching him, and his wife (investigator, Ruth Helen).  He has been attending church and all, and its been good.  But its been hard for me to pass the sacrament to his wife, and not to him.  And this week, he went to give his testimony, and it was awesome.  After...during the second hour of church, he had a interview with Pres De Rama.  And when he entered the class after, he looked at everyone...smiled...then sat down with his wife.  After church, we went to his house, and then he told us...he has been cleared to use his priesthood, bless the sacrament, and everything!   And..........his wife wants to be baptized.......and Antonio can Baptize her!  I am so happy for them!  It really is the perfect situation.  I love them so much, and they already have goals to marry in the temple.  It really is just perfect.

Second,  we have an investigator who has been listening, reading, and praying for 6 months, but never has attended church.  And this week...he came !  I smiled so big when he entered.

With my comp, things were good.  We were joking around, having a good time, and working, but then things took a turn yesterday, and now I am walking through a minefield.  In the dark.  With a blindfold.  Don’t know what to do. But I’ll figure it out.

Do you ever get to see Michael Smith?
I’ve seen him only one time.  I really want to talk with him, but he’s far away.  He’s training someone though, which is awesome.  I’m sure he's doing great.

Photos?
Nothing really awesome happened this week.

Service this week?
We continued with the construction with the house (that we worked on last week)....right before fasting.....I though I would die!

Any special mission activities?
Interviews!  ...which I love, on Wednesday.  And I think there may be something else coming up...find out Thursday.

Investigators?
Were working to find some new ones.  We’ve got some great ones...but always need more.  Many people here are hard hearted....Like Nehor-hard.  We have talked with like 60 people in the past couple of weeks...and we have entered 2 houses.

Spiritual time?
I have had some great study times.

This transfer,  I feel like I have taken a step back in some aspects, and huge steps forward in others.  My prayers have never been so powerful, or so answered, and yet...I have never felt so alone and tired.  I feel like I am spinning in circles, that my lessons are failing, and everything else is struggling.  It’s super frustrating,  ...BUT don’t worry,  I am working hard to be obediente, and to work...Just need some time and help,.

I found a couple of scriptures that I love....Ether 2:24, and DC 95:1.  The Lord is making me what he wants me to be.  It’s hard, and I am struggling, but I can feel His love and I can feel His purpose,  Just need a little more of His patience and His guidance.   There is really no other way to improve, unless its through the fire and flames.

Sorry its a boring letter.

I love you so much!
